Knowing how to donate a vehicle to charity isn’t as difficult to learn as you might think. Charitable donation is usually as simple as finding a charity in need. Where should you look? There are charities everywhere waiting for you to donate your cars, look in places like your area yellow pages, church bulletins and on websites like Charity Navigator for information. Once you’ve found a charity that seems like a good option, call their number and ask if they’d be interested if you donated your cars to them.

If the answer is yes then you should ask them how to donate a vehicle to their charity. Most charities either take the cars at their donation center or in the case of a church at the church itself. While many charities will offer you the option of having them tow the car from your house you shouldn’t take them up on the offer. Why? When donating your cars be sure to sign the title for the vehicles over to the charity directly before you give them the title. Leaving it in your name or leaving the title blank could give you trouble down the road if the car is used in any illegal activities or piles up traffic tickets as you’re likely to be the last recorded owner of the car. It’s also important to verify the charity’s 501 (c) (3) status in order to receive your tax benefit when tax season rolls around. This is the most important part of learning how to donate a vehicle, because not only does it get you the benefit but it also prevents you from facing legal trouble for not reporting a large donation.
