How Giving A Car To Charity Can Benefit You At Tax Time

Posted on Tuesday 17 November 2009

Did you know that giving a car to charity can do more than just benefit a charity? It’s true. Car donation to charity is one way that you can get a receipt that can benefit you at income tax time. This is because donating a car to a registered charity is considered to be the same as a monetary donation when considering charitable contributions on your income tax.

Any registered charity can give you a tax receipt, but you should keep in mind that only a registered charity is legally permitted to give you a tax receipt. They do this when you sign over the car to them. When you are signing your vehicle over to a charity, you write the name of that charity on the new owner portion of the vehicle ownership form.

You may think that because your vehicle is not in good condition, it will not be worth anything to a charity but this is not the case. There are a number of different ways that any charity can use a vehicle even if that vehicle is no longer running. A car can be sold for scrap metal or it can be broken down into different components and those can be sold off for money which is then used to finance the operations of the charity and its programs.

If a car is in running condition, it can be used in a number of different ways to help that charity out. It might still be resold in order to finance the operations of that charity but often it is used to help charities assist their clients. For example, the Kidney Foundation often uses donated vehicles to drive patients to dialysis appointments that they would have no other way to get to.

You may be amazed at how much money you can get for a car which is no longer in good shape. By choosing to donate your vehicle instead of simply junking it, you can feel happy knowing that you will be benefitting at tax time and that your charity will also benefit all year long.
