Dysautonomia Foundation, Inc.Familial Dysautonomia (FD) is a rare genetic condition that affects the autonomic and sensory nervous systems. Children with FD don't produce tears, which causes serious eye problems; they can't feel pain, which makes undiagnosed broken bones and burns very common; their blood pressure, heart and digenstive systems don't function normally which can lead to many other life-threatening consequesnces. 1 in 27 Ashkanazi Jews are carriers of the gene that causes FD.
The Dysautonomia Foundation is the primary source of funding for the Dysautonomia Treatment and Evaluation Center at NYU Medical Center--the only center of its kind in the USA to treat children and adults with FD. In addition, the foundation raises funds and helps direct research into the function of the gene and hopefully will find a cure for this fatal disease.
After finding the gene in 2001, the foundation has been actively engaged in public awareness campaigns to make the population aware of the availability of carrier and prenatal screening for this illness. Please help the Dysautonomia Foundation, Inc. in its quest.
